Beer Bible Book Tour - Save the Dates!

The substantially revised and updated Second Edition of my Beer Bible will be released later this month, with a book tour to follow. I’ll do twenty events in support of the book from coast to coast (Covid-permitting!), and I really hope you’ll join me. All the stops will feature a discussion with someone interesting about the book and beer in general, and most are free. Even if you don’t want to commit to buying a copy, I hope you come to events near you, buy some beer, and help make the event a success. These will be fun stops. I especially want big crowds as thanks to all the wonderful breweries and pubs who are hosting me. But of course I also hope you’ll buy a copy of the book! (The holidays are just around the corner.) I’ll bring my signing pen.

I’ll describe what’s new in a subsequent post, but I wanted to get this info out now so you can begin planning. The one thing I’d like to emphasize about the book is this: I set about creating the most accurate and comprehensive book about beer in the English language. I speak to many brewers and well-educated beer fans, and they often tell me they didn’t bother buying the Beer Bible because they assumed it was pitched at beginners. It’s useful for them, for sure, but it also contains a wealth of history, information about brewing traditions and techniques, as well as fairly technical comments about the brewing process. It’s the kind of book anyone would like to have at hand to answer quick questions you might have. (I don’t remember every detail in the book and that’s how I use it, too.)

But enough of that—let’s get to the dates and locations! As an FYI, you’ll note that I’m linking each indie bookseller we’re partnering with. If you can’t make the event but would like a signed copy, visit or contact the listed bookstore—I’ll leave them with a cache of signed books. (In some cases, the venue will act as the bookseller.)

Portland - Official Kick-Off

Gigantic Brewing, 5224 SE 26th Ave, Thursday Sept 23rd, 6:30 pm, free

I will be joined by Gigantic founders Ben Love and Van Havig, and we’ll talk beer, using Gigantic’s dual approach (traditional ales and lagers + cutting-edge IPAs) as a template for understanding national tradition. These guys are fun and I guarantee a blast. I’ll sign books afterward.

Seattle - Reuben’s Brews [CancelEd]

Tuesday Sept 28, 7:00 pm, 5010 14th Ave NW, Ticketed event

Atlantic Highlands, NJ - Carton Brewing

Sunday, Oct 3, 1:00 pm, 6 E.Washington, free

This is the one solo book signing in the trip, but very special guest John Holl will be in attendance and I wouldn’t be shocked if owner Augie Carton didn’t show up. Something interesting may happen!

Bookseller: River Road Books

Bethlehem, PA - Bonn Place

Mon, Oct 4, 5:30 pm, 310-14 Taylor, free

This stop will feature a conversation with writer and editor John Holl (Drink Beer, Think Beer). John is a smart and charismatic speaker and I expect a lively discussion. Followed by a book signing.

Bookseller: Moravian Books

Metuchen, NJ - Hailey’s Harp

Tues, Oct 5, 7:00 pm, 400 Main St, Ticketed beer dinner

John Holl and I have another conversation over a three-course meal with appropriate beer pairings. This is going to be a packed and memorable night. Followed by a book signing.

NYC - Torch & Crown

Weds Oct 6, 6:00 pm, 12 Vandam (Manhattan), Ticketed beer dinner

The relatively new Manhattan brewery has planned a big event: a 3-course beer dinner featuring a whole pig roasted in-house, carved up tableside, and served family style for guests to enjoy. In addition to the feast, co-founder and brewer Joe Correia and I will chat about the beer, followed by a panel discussion with Josh Bernstein moderated by Chris McClellan. I’ll sign books afterward. Tickets here.

Baltimore - Guinness Open Gate Brewery

Thu, Oct 7, 4-7 pm, 5001 Washington, free

This is going to feature a high-wire act as we do a podcast recording of the event, featuring Guinness brewers, with an audience Q&A. I’ll be on site before and after to drink beers and sign books with anyone who wants to chat.

Minneapolis - Fair State

Tues, Oct 12, 7:00 pm, 2506 Central Ave NE, free

I will be joining Fair State’s Lab Manager, Katie Montgomery for an interactive guided sensory tasting tour (one free pour per guest) followed by an audience Q&A and book signing. Guided tours are a lot of fun and Katie will help us identify subtle and elusive flavors.

Bookseller: Moon Palace Books

Milwaukee - Eagle Park

Weds, Oct 13, 5:00 pm, 823 E Hamilton, free

I will be joining head brewer and founder Jackson Borgardt in conversation in Packerland. The even includes a discount on beers and will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing.

Chicago - Half Acre

Thurs, Oct 14, 7:00 pm, 2050 W Balmoral Ave, free

I’ll join the Chicago Tribune’s Josh Noel for a conversation over Half Acre beers in the Windy City. As a bonus, Josh’s book Barrel-Aged Stout and Selling Out will also be available and we’ll sign books after the event.

Bookseller: Uncharted Books

Denver - Lady Justice

Tues, Oct 19, Time TBA, 9735 E Colfax (Aurora), details TBA

This was a late but very welcome substitution, and the program is still developing. I hope to be in conversation with at least one of the three women co-founders. We’ll cook up something good.

San Diego - Pure Project

Weds, Oct 20, 6:00 pm, 9030 Kenamar Dr #308, free

This may be the one stop when I do most of the talking, but I hope to coax brewery educator Chris Leguizamon—and possibly others!—into a conversation.

Bookseller: The Homebrewer

Los Angeles - Firestone Walker Propagator

Sun, Oct 24, 2:00 pm, 3205 Washington Blvd, free

On this stop, Propagator brewer Sam Tierney and I will drink some Firestone beer and talk about the book. There was some talk of trying to lure Matt Brynildson down from Paso Robles to join in. You’ll have to come and see!

Richmond (Bay Area) - East Brother

Mon, Oct 25, 5:30pm (ticketed) and 6:30 pm (free), 1001 Canal Blvd

The brewery’s normally closed on Mondays, so we have the place to ourselves. Beginning at 5:30, head brewer Paul Liszewski and I are going to get nerdy about lagers. We’ll do a Q&A and I’ll sign books after. Ticket-holders will get a flight of beer, a signed book, and 50% off beers the rest of the night. At 6:30 I’ll hang out with Paul and chat with folks. Books will also be available on-site from Book Passage. Tickets here.

I’ll arrive at 5pm to meet with homebrewers, and then at 5:30, co-founder Lester Koga, brewer John “Magic” Montes De Oca, and I will discuss regionality of different beers, with a special focus on the long history of SF and the outsized role Northern California played in building modern craft brewing.

Bookseller: Omnivore Books

Atlanta - New Realm

Mon, Nov 1, 6:00 pm, 550 Somerset Terrace NE #101, free

Asheville - Highland

Thurs, Nov 4, 6:00 pm, 12 Old Charlotte Hwy, free

On this stop I’ll be joined by North Carolinian writer Bryan Roth, who will moderate a discussion with second-generation CEO Leah Wong Ashburn. Highland, like many of the breweries I toured in Europe, is a family affair learning how to thrive across generations.
