Auction 2 For Ukraine: Rare Cellar Beers

Thanks to those who bid on these, this auction raised $350 to go along with $150 in the first auction. Thanks!

Some news before we get to today’s auction. Things have gotten much more dire since a group including Ukrainian Lana Svitankova launched #DrinkersForUkraine. The Russian military, exposed as a weaker force than its size predicted, has now taken a blunt-force approach to conquering its neighbor. Apparently committed to war crimes, Russia has resorted to bombing civilian targets. All signs point to a protracted struggle, all because a dictator can’t stomach the burn of a humiliating defeat. Currently, hundreds of thousands are trapped in Mariupol without food, water, or power—and it will get worse. It is a desperate situation, and we can help with our dollars.

Hearteningly, efforts are under way to help the people of Ukraine. Polish-owned Threshold is holding a fundraiser to support refugees, such an important effort as the number now exceeds a million, and late last week Baerlic announced it would match gifts up to $10,000 to support Ukraine (which would mean total commitments of up to $20k). Remarkable! (Click that link to give.) Finally, the #DrinkersForUkraine fundraiser as already raised $2,000, and I’m so happy to report that $150 came from James, a generous donor who placed the winning bid on The Beer Bible in my first auction. Today I’ve got some cellar beers for auction two, so please consider bidding.

Auction 2: Rare Beers

The way it works is simple. When you see an item, place a bid on it, and when the auction expires, the winner makes a donation in that amount to the Red Cross. Then the winner sends a receipt of the donation to the person auctioning the item, and they’ll ship the item to you. Easy-peasy! Remember, make your bid in comments here on the blog. (If I see bids on social, I’ll post them below.)

All of these beers have been stored upright in my basement, which has a pretty stable ambient temperature of around 55-60 degrees. (It used to be a lot cooler, but we buttoned up the house to make it more green a decade ago.) I’ll accept a minimum bid of $10 for each of them, though I hope we can do better than that. Shipping anywhere in the US. Auction expires Thursday, March 10 at noon Pacific Time (3p ET). When you place your bid, please identify the beer you’re bidding on!

  • Item 1. Hair of the Dog Fred, Batch 84 (2011). 12 ounces, 10% ABV

  • Item 2. Deschutes Abyss (2011). 22 ounces, 11% ABV

  • Item 3. Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. (2017) 500 ml, 14.1%

I’ve got some more beer down there, but we’ll start with these to see how the whole thing works. Open your wallets and good luck!
